Offers a
magnificent and splendid view of the valley. It is an out-of-this-world experience to look down and see the River Sutlej winding its way between the mountains, overlooking at the same time both Kasauli and Shimla (45 km) further via Kufri. It is an even more splendid view in the night, with the distant lights of the surroundings creating its own magic pattern on the horizon.
One has to see to believe what poets and writers have been describing the Himalayas as since time immemorial. One is awestruck to see the massive Himalayan ranges, their snow-capped peaks spectacularly gleaming in the sun. It is definitely an out-of-this-world sight and one can spend hours and hours together, admiring the magic it creates in the mind. The snow remains there until the beginning of the spring when the flowers come out in full bloom. This is the time when the meadows are filled with hyacinth and celandine, while the carmine and rhododendron trees are surrounded by solemn forests of deodar and towering pine trees.
Chamba
The land of tranquility art and scenic beauty is a wonder in itself for every visitor. Situated at the height of 996 m. above sea level on the south bank of the Ravi River, the ancient Pahari capital was founded in 920 A.D. by Raja Sahil Verma, who named it after his favorite daughter Champavati. Chamba valley is noted for the magnificence of it’s scenery-touching the fringe of the Shivaliks and having three well defined snowy ranges, the Dauladhar, constituting the outer Himalayas, the Pir Panjal or the mid Himalayas and the Zanskar range or the inner Himalayas.
Chamba’s serene beauty makes it the ideal holiday retreat. The land of mystic serenity, enchanting vistas, refreshing air, lofty mountain passes and slopes, provides ample opportunities to nature lovers. The place and adjoining areas have immense scope of leisure pursuits. The waters, hills, plateaus and the snowline, which can be sighted from any of the buildings and the main square, make a spectacle that can become an inspiration for many painters and poets.
Dalhousie
A picturesque and popular
hill station, Dalhousie was set up in 1854, as a retreat for the British soldiers and bureaucrats. Located atop the five hills of Kathalagh, Potreyn, Terah, Bakrota and Bhangora, it was named after the British Viceroy Lord Dalhousie. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, and situated on the western side of the mountainous ranges of Dhauladhar, it is known not only for its captivating beauty, but also for the ancient temples, the valleys of Chamba and Pangi which are great trekking grounds. Visit the beautiful churches of St. Andrew’s and St. Patrick’s at Balun, the St. Francis’ Church at Subash Chowk, and St. John’s Church at Gandhi Chowk. Barapathar (4 km away) is a small temple in the midst of dense forests. You could also visit the Chamba Ruler’s summer palace of Jandrighat, which has some interesting period architecture. You could pay homage to freedom fighters, by visiting Panchpula, 3km ahead, to see the monument of Ajit Singh, and then head to Subhash Baoli, named after famous freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose, who was said to have frequented this place.
Dharamshala
Dharamshala stands at the foot of Dhauladhar and has a magnificent view of snowy peaks, deodar and pine forests, tea gardens and beautiful hills. The snow line is perhaps more easily accessible at Dharamshala than any other hill station in India. Dharamshala now really has become international, with a number of Tibetan settlements and the residence of Noble leader the ‘Dalai Lama’. Dharamshala is divided into two distinct parts : lower Dharamshala the civil and business area with Courts and Kotwali bazar and upper Dharamshala composed of places like Mcleod Ganj and Forsyth Ganj.
Kinnaur
Kinnaur is the south eastern district of Himachal Pradesh and lies at an altitude ranging between 2320 – 6816 m. It is situated on the National Highway No – 22 which is popularly known as the Hindustan Tibet Road. Shimla, the state capital is around 250 km away. The district is basically a mountainous region with a temperate climate. Vegetation in areas on higher elevation is sparse while at lower elevation temperate trees like oak, chestnut, maple, birch, alder, magnolia, apple and apricot can be spotted.
Tourists coming to Kinnaur have a lot to see and do. There are beautiful natural surroundings to relax and refresh. Nearly every village of the district has a gompa or a temple. Moreover, since Kinnaur is located on the Indo – Tibet border, their culture and lifestyle is a considerable mix of both.
Kinnaur is not accessible throughout the year. In the winter season, heavy snowfall covers the area and blocks the passage to Kinnaur. The best time to visit Kinnaur is in summers, between the months of April to October.
