 Leh – Nubra Valley

7 NIGHTS / 8 DAYS

Day 01 DELHI/LEH

Meet upon arrival at Leh airport and transfer to hotel. Day free for acclimatisation and individual activities.

Overnight Hotel.

Day 02 In Leh  Excursion To Monasteries

Morning after breakfast sightseeing of . Hemis Gompa, Thiksey Gompa and Shey Palace. Hemis is one of the largest and wealthiest monasteries in Ladakh and houses about 150 monks; it also stages the annual Hemis festival. On the way back to Leh, visit the superbly situated, 16th century, Thiksey Gompa, which is perched on a hill top. Last stop is the ruined SheyPalace, once the summer palace of the pre-Tibetan kings. The palace monastery houses a large, bronze, blue haired Buddha statue. Later drive back to Hotel  for  overnight stay.

Day 03 Leh / Diskit Via Khardung La

Early morning drive from Leh to Nubra (7 hrs drive). TheNubraValleylies in the north of Leh and is accessible over the Khardung la (18,380 ft.) one of the highest motorable roads in the world. The valley is on the trade route from Leh to Kharga via Saser and Karakoram passes. Apart from unparalleled trekking opportunities the valley houses several Buddhist monasteries such as Sumur (Khagar) and 350 years old Diskit Gompa famous for its murals. From Khardung la drive to thevillageofKhardungand then through starkly beautiful countryside to the TCP at Khalsar where permits have to be registered/checked. From here one has to turn to the left ofShyokRiverand drive for about 24 kms over a narrow steep road to Diskit where one has to stay in camps.

Day 04 In Diskit

After breakfast walk upto Diskit monastery to witness the Morning Prayer ceremony. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the monastery through a long scattered chortens. The Gompa is one of the highest point near the village belonging to the yellow sect (Gelugpa). Parts of the gompa, which houses 120 resident monks, are about 700 years old. The Dukhang has many statues, one of which holds the head and left arm of Turkish invader believed to be about 5000 years old.

Return to camp for lunch.

Afternoon: Drive 7 kms to visit Hunder Gompa. This is a small gompa belonging to the yellow sect. It is set amidst innumerable chortens and has a huge impressive statue of Chamba in the main prayer hall. The gompa was built at the time when King Namgyal came here with his wife Gyal Khatun.

Day 05 Diskit/Leh

After breakfast drive downwardShyokRiver. An extremely rough and rocky stretch of flat ground. Cross the river over a bridge and arrive at the firstvillageofTirith. The road from here is extremely bad all the way upto Panamiki. The scenery however is spectacular with the snow-cappedKarakoramMountainsin the background. The weather being much warmer in comparison to theIndusValley, vegetation is thicker with a variety of trees and flowers. Visit the 150 years old Samasthanling Gompa at Bumur/Khagar. It is a big complex of 7 temples including the Ricpoches room. Walk half an hour from the gompa to Tegar village where there is another small gompa. Walk through the village and explore the surroundings. Also a small lake lies there. Later, transfer to Leh (172 kms)

Day 06 Leh – Panagong – Leh

Morning after early breakfast drive towards  east of Leh via Chang-la Mountain Pass (18,000 ft / 5,475 m) to Pangong Lake, (4267m / 14000 ft.), 145 kms / 5 hours one way upto the shore of the lake and the first village, Lukung.

PangongLakeis 7 kms at its widest point, and over 130 kms long, and is divided by the international border betweenIndiaandChinaonly one-third of it lying inIndia. Spangmik, the farthest point is about 7 kms along the southern shore from the head of the lake.  It presents a spectacular view of the mountains of the Chang-chenmo range to the north, their reflections shimmering in the ever-changing blues and greens of the lake’s brackish waters. Above Spangmik are the glaciers and snow-capped peaks of the Pangong range. The water o the lake is salty.

Later drive back to Leh for overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 07  In Leh

Morning free. Afternoon visit Shanti Stupa built  by Japanese, Shankar Gompa is associated with Spituk Gompa and serves as the residence of the Head Lama. The monastery has Dukar Lakhang with a Dukar figure, a most impressive representative of Avalokiteshvara complete with 1000 armes (All holding weapons), and 1000 heads. The painting of the walls is worth seeingLehPalaceis to be visited by foot as it is situated on a hillock. It was built by Sengge Namgyal it is a 9-storey Palace, A building in the grand tradition of Tibetan architecture, said to have inspired the famous Potala in Lahsa.

After breakfast transfer to Leh Airport to catch flight for onward destination

After breakfast transfer to Srinagar airport to board flight for onward destination.
